I made pillows!

I actually made pillows this week… wow! I have had a sewing machine for years, and have used it more on scrapbook pages than on fabric. I found these super cute cloth napkins at TJ Maxx a few months ago and thought that they would make the perfect pillows for my living room.

20140302_071

Of course they stayed in my craft room for a couple of months before I finally got motivated to actually sew them.  So a couple of weeks ago I finally broke out the sewing machine and pulled out the napkins.

Of course I was all motivated to go when I decided that I should probably wash and iron the napkins first.

So into the wash they went, and then I brought them downstairs to the craft room and started sewing. Surprisingly enough I did a pretty decent job and kept the stitch lines pretty straight.  As long as you do not look too closely that is ;)

I was all ready to stuff the pillows, using a couple of old bedroom pillows that I had saved for this purpose. Of course once I opened the pillows up I realized that the stuffing was not going to work. And since my closest craft store is over 40 minutes away I decided to log into Amazon and ordered this. I love Amazon Prime!

A week later I finally finished my pillows!

Of course Eric still has not noticed them, but Megan noticed them as soon as she came into the room and told me that she loved them!

I am so proud of myself.. I made pillows!

Sunburst Mirror Redo

My sister gave me this great sunburst mirror for my birthday a few years ago. I really liked the shape, but did not like the colored plastic gemstones so the mirror lived in the closet of my craft room for years.

After we moved I decided to pop off the colored “gems” and replace them with mirrors. I promptly ordered the mirrors and they sat in my craft room for a few more months before I finally got around to popping the rest of the gems out and gluing in the mirrors.

Before I share the after of the mirror I need to share the spot where it is now hanging, well the before of it that is. Currently there is an old bookcase at the top of the stairs being used as an entry table. I would love to get a dresser to use here instead as we need a place to store the dog leashes and other pet related items, preferably hidden.

And here is the after, decorated for spring!

Yes, I still need to iron the tablecloth but this little table now looks so much better!

On the table I placed a little bunny Easter tree and a sweet picture of my Mom and Aunts on Easter when they were girls

Pinspired Firepit Art

When browsing on Pinterest one day I saw this sign

Super cute, but I wanted one for our firepit area! I showed my sister one day and she said that she could make one!

Fast forward a couple of weeks and Amanda and Billy come over to hang out around the firepit and they bring this with them…

Firepit Art at Lifeonbirchst.com

Amazing right? And so much better than the original in my opinion! The only thing that is left is to have Billy put in some keyhole hangars so that we can hang it up outside without drilling through the prettiness on the front. Luckily he has the perfect bit since we bought one when he helped Eric build the shelves for the Map Wall

Check out the tutorial on my talented sister Amanda’s blog for more information on how she created this amazing firepit art for me. While she has mostly cards on her blog, take a few minutes to browse through her project galleries for the other Home Decor items that she has made.

Lighted Birdcage

Christmas Lighted birdcage from Lifeonbirchst.com

Christmas Lighted birdcage from Lifeonbirchst.com

When I was decorating for Christmas this past winter I had the idea to put some Ornaments and Christmas Lights into this birdcage that I had. I loved how it turned out and have had this lighted birdcage up on top of the entertainment center in the living room since just after Thanksgiving. I really liked having the light up there but knew that I needed to put the ornaments away. I had the idea to make a more neutral lighted birdcage using wicker spheres, but of course it took me a few months to find some at a reasonable cost!

I finally found these at Wal-Mart last week for under $10 each, though they only had one package of the neutral ones.

20140312_012

So I set the red ones aside for future use and put all of the neutral ones in the birdcage. I was concerned about the heat of the Christmas lights, but checked them regularly and they did not feel hot at all. Just in case I also added a timer this time so that the lights are only on in the evening.

I really love this transformation, and can now keep my lighted birdcage up all year! Of course this is not where it will live permanently. We are using a rustic armoire style entertainment center given to us by some good friends. While we love it, it is very deep, meant for an older style TV. This means that there is a lot of real estate on the top to fill. You can see the top of the entertainment center from the landing and hallway since the living room is recessed (the photos above were taken standing on the landing) which means that the decor up there needs to look good from both the living room and the upper level!

I am on a mission to collect a bunch of globes to put on top of the entertainment center, to include a lighted one so that I still have a light up there! I am hoping that I am able to find some once garage sale season starts here in a few weeks.

Recovered Bench Cushion

I started recovering my dining room chairs last year, but the staple gun started to hurt my wrist so I only got 2 chairs done at the time. In the meantime, the girls continued to spill things on the bench and it got embarrassing when people would come over and see it. So I finally got around to recovering the bench cushion this weekend.

Bench Before recovering

Bench Before recovering

What is really sad is that I have had all of the fabric for the bench (and the other three chairs that still need to be recovered) cut since I started this process. What is even more sad is that it only took me 20 minutes to get it done. The only reason it took that long was because I had to find a couple of extra screws and change the battery on the drill.

So now, the bench looks like this:

And when the girls saw me taking a picture of the recovered bench cushion and they had to hop in the picture.

I still have the other three dining chairs to recover, but once again the staple gun hurt my wrist. Next time I need to get everything ready and have Eric do the stapling!

DIY Home Decor Frame

I was actually motivated to scrapbook this evening, and when I was cleaning up I stopped when I saw this quote about friendship. The colors in the text match my girls bedroom perfectly so I matted it on some coordinating paper, and pulled out a frame from my stash. I decided to make a DIY home decor frame for my girls room.

20140309_059

Of course I had to cover up the floral patterned inset on the frame. I found some white pearly craft paint and was almost ready to paint when I looked closer at the frame and realized that the pattern was paper. It came off so quickly!

The gold frame works with the current home decor trend of mixing metals, and adding gold tones into decor.

As usual the girls were already in bed when I made this so I will have to take a picture of it on the wall later!  A quick, easy DIY Home Decor frame!

Pinspired Storage Locker

Before we started considering building a new house, I saw this storage locker built in on Pinterest, from Saw Dust Girl.

I fell in love with this and started to try and figure out how to incorporate something like this in our home. Of course once we started to build I was able to add it to the plans!

Here is what ours looks like!

Of course it does not usually look like this! Lauren wanted to earn some extra money for her Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser and we agreed to give her some extra chores. She did a great job clearing out the storage lockers, and even wiped down the bench. She also added a bag of trash and a bag of too small shoes for my 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge. Usually there are shoes all over the floor in front of the storage locker, bags and coats shoved on the bench, and the cabinets below the bench where the shoes belong are usually empty.

This is another of those spaces that I absolutely love, and makes me smile when I walk by it, well.. when it is clean like this that is.

40 Bags in 40 Days 2014

trash-bags

Have you heard of 40 Bags in 40 Days? I just saw this yesterday on White House Black Shutters and thought that it would be the perfect thing to add to my Lenten devotions and get some of this crap out of my house! She even hosts a closed Facebook Group for support!

40 Bags in 40 Days is a “challenge” where you focus on cleaning one area per day during the 40 days of Lent. Of course you could do this at any time, and do not have to be Catholic to participate.  The goal is one bag a day of trash, donations etc. You can have more or less, and any size bag that works for you! I plan on running to the store today for some smaller trash bags so that it is not as overwhelming for me. Those big black ones look overwhelming!

If you do not think you have enough stuff for 40 bags, you can try focusing on 40 spots in your home. White House Black Shutters has a printable to help you with this, and I found quite a few more on Pinterest. I do not have a list, but plan on posting my progress on Instagram each day, with a wrap up here on the blog on Wednesday’s.

So, are you ready to join us and clear out 40 bags of stuff in 40 days yet? Worried that you missed a day or two because you did not see this in time? No worries! Just jump right in whenever you can. You might surprise yourself and catch up! If you post your progress on Instagram don’t forget the #40bagsin40days hashtag when you post so that we can all follow along with you!

Our Pinspired Pink Bathroom

Our kids bathroom was also inspired by a Pinterest pin. I was actually looking for flooring ideas when we came across this photo. I loved the floors, and Eric actually like the pink ceiling!

Pink Bathroom Pinspiration

Pink Bathroom Pinspiration

Of course our bathroom did not turn out quite the same. Eric had the painters use the same grey paint on the walls, instead of the white in the photo, and our bathroom does not have any natural light.

Looking in from the doorway, the wall and ceiling colors in the reflection are most accurate. I still think that the walls need to be white, and since they used a flat paint in the bathroom we may repaint it white before too long.

This view is standing by the toilet. The doorway is just to the left, and you can see the shower curtain that I found at home goods. It has the perfect shade of pinks and grays, and really helps to tie all of the colors in together.

The shelves over the toilet (also seen in the reflection in the first photo) were also inspired from a Pinterest Pin from Home Stories From A to Z. Now I just need to find things to go on the shelves! I have had the pink polka dot bin since before Megan was born, it used to be on their changing table!

There is still quite a few things that I want to get done in our pink bathroom. I plan on switching out the towel rod for hooks, in fact I already have 3 black iron fleur de lis hooks from Hobby Lobby that I planned on putting in the space. I am just trying to decide between keeping them black to tie in with the floor tiles, or painting them white or pink. I also need to find items for the shelves and wall decor.

My home office inspiration

My home office was supposed to be in the addition over the third car garage, a 10 x 17ft space that we did not have in the previous house. When we were in the building process of the house Eric noticed how high the roof line was and had a brilliant idea. Why not use some of that wasted space and build a loft in the office? Then we decided to move my office into the loft and use the room as a guest room. So now I have the 10 x 7.5ft space for my home office. Yep, that means climbing a ladder to get to work on the days that I work from home.

Currently I am using a dining chair and folding table as my office furniture while we figure out what we want. Here are a couple of pictures as it is today (sorry, it was really hard to take pictures of the space!)

My sister painted me this beautiful painting for my birthday this past year, in the colors that I wanted in the office space. Grey, yellow, black and white. (Check out her blog for more info on the drip art canvas )

I started playing around on Polyvore for the first time a few days ago and decided to find inspiration for my home office. I started with the colors in the canvas above, but then decided that it needed one additional pop of color. Of course that color had to be my favorite color… Pink!

Here is my office inspiration

We found a very similar desk at Nebraska Furniture Mart that we may get, and it will probably be a while before I can show you the “after” of my home office space, but I am excited to get started!

The only other changes to the loft space in the works is a railing for the ladder (we already have it, it just needs to be bolted into place) and possibly a window added to let in some natural light/ air. Too bad we did not think of the window during the building process…
